A good rule of thumb for everyone. When summer comes around it is always a good idea to carry a thermometer to monitor water temps.

This is our first clean up of the season and look to organize a couple more. In Steamboat Springs, we've been keeping track of our loot and this year found less river bootie than last year. Fun Fact Friday: the Greenback cutthroat trout officially became Colorado's state fish in 1994, through legislation adopted by the General Assembly and signed by Governor Roy Romer. Before that time the rainbow trout - a California transplant to the state - had been considered the state fish. Yampa Valley Fly Fishers will host their annual Holiday Meeting Wednesday, December 13 at 6:30 pm at Rex's American Grill.
This month's meeting will feature a presentation on the Yampa River Health Assessment and Stream Management Plan. This will be a review of the Yampa River health assessment survey and a discussion of what can be done to improve the identified concerns.
Our raffle will include a Christmas Tree decorated with flies donated by our members. Everyone is asked to bring three of their favorite flies to decorate our tree.
We will provide pizza, appetizers, and a slide show featuring members' photos of their fishing highlights from the past year.

Autumn on the Yampa River is the perfect time to try out a new skill! The sky may be gray, but smiles are bright, and the crowds of summer have started to dissipate. Come join SheJumps and Steamboat Flyfisher for a women’s-only Intro to Flyfishing clinic right here on our wild and scenic Yampa River!

The day-long clinic will include an indoor component starting at Steamboat Flyfisher and moving to outdoor work nearby on the river and various other open space. Having your own gear is great, but rods and reels will be supplied by the shop if you don’t have your own – and Steamboat Flyfisher will also offer discounted rentals on waders. All participants will need a Colorado fishing license for the day (or an annual pass so you can fish past the day of the clinic!) which can be purchased statewide at many retailers or online – just be sure to bring it with you to the clinic.

Topics to be covered throughout the day include knots, casting, bugs, gear, river reading, and more – plus, plenty of time to get out and FISH! All instructing staff are women who fish locally and contain a wealth of knowledge about the sport – and they’re pumped to share it with you.

Lunch and snacks will be provided, but you’re free to supplement as you please! When the clinic ends around 4, we’ll invite friends to join us all for happy hour nearby to close out the day and participate in a fantastic drawing (ticket sales to support SheJumps) with lots of great outdoor gear, flyfishing swag, and much more.

Yampa Valley Fly Fishers annual fly tying meeting will take place Wednesday, February 8 at 6:30pm at Rex's American Grill. This meeting will feature fly tying demonstrations by some of the finest tyers in the Yampa Valley. Steve Henderson of Henderson Fly Fishing will be tying his flash back variation of the pheasant tail nymph and move on to some of his other highly productive proven patterns. Paul Russell of Yampa River Outfitters will tie his signature Pablo's Cripple and branch out into other successful dries for the Yampa River. Bennett Colvin of Yampa Valley Fly Fishers will demonstrate jig hook nymph patterns, deep sinking flies that hang up on the bottom less, and former Alaska guide Greg Breslau of the Yampa Valley Fly Fishers will focus on streamer patterns for large trout.
